NIOX® vs Vivatmo

Discover the differences between NIOX® and Vivatmo

Why choose NIOX®?

Fully conforms to the ATS & ERS Standards1

With no unexpected reconditioning, direct NO measurement, and instant test restarts, NIOX® is designed with healthcare professionals in mind, whether that is primary care or secondary care.

NIOX® is the only FeNO technology available in the EU and US markets that follows the published ATS & ERS online measurement protocols in full, including inhalation of NO-free air.1,2

The key differences

Truly removes
ambient NO

Fully conforming the ATS & ERS standards, the integrated NIOX NeutroNO™ scrubber truly removes ambient nitric oxide on inhalation, alongside only taking in the last few seconds of the exhalation flow to analyse the lower airways.1-4

Actually measures
nitric oxide

Unlike Vivatmo, NIOX® actually measures the correct biomarker, nitric oxide, instead of converting the measurement into nitric dioxide with unnecessary processes.5

Self-contained and fully dependable

Unlike Vivatmo, NIOX® is a standalone desktop device and does not rely on a bluetooth connection to perform tests, making FeNO testing reliable.

NIOX® vs Vivatmo FAQs

Ambient nitric oxide (NO) levels can vary dramatically from as low as 2 ppb to over 500 ppb depending on the environment.9 If ambient NO is inhaled during testing, it can contaminate the exhaled breath sample and artificially elevate the FeNO result.10-12 This may lead to inaccurate assessments of airway inflammation, potentially resulting in misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment decisions.

By removing ambient NO, on inhalation and before the measurement begins, clinicians can be confident that the measured FeNO reflects the patient’s own NO production, providing a more accurate and reliable indicator of airway inflammation.3,4,13

To fully conform to the ATS / ERS standards, a controlled ambient environment (ambient NO < 5 ppb) is essential to ensure the breath sample starts from a known baseline with no interference.2 While it may be difficult to control environmental nitric oxide concentrations, NIOX® devices remove ambient NO from the inhaled air before testing.3,4

Before the FeNO measurement, the user inhales through the patented NIOX® Breathing Handle containing a NeutroNO® scrubber. The scrubber removes ambient nitric oxide (NO) from the inhaled air, preventing it from contaminating the exhaled breath sample.

This initial 4–5 second inhalation is a quick, easy, but essential step that removes the influence of ambient NO before the measurement begins. Environmental NO levels can range from 2 ppb to 500 ppb, and without a clean inhalation, ambient NO could artificially elevate the FeNO reading.9-12 By eliminating this source of contamination, the measured FeNO value accurately reflects the patient's own airway NO production. Removing ambient NO helps ensure accurate, reliable, and reproducible FeNO measurements that clinicians can trust, supporting confident clinical decision-making.9,10,14

Reconditioning can significantly disrupt clinic workflow by making the device unavailable for testing when it is needed most. For example, the Vivatmo may require up to 90 minutes to complete a reconditioning cycle, effectively stopping testing at short notice. This can lead to delays, patient rescheduling, reduced clinic throughput, and frustration for both staff and patients. Minimising or eliminating reconditioning downtime helps ensure testing remains available throughout the day, supporting efficient workflows and uninterrupted patient care.

FeNO testing is designed to measure nitric oxide (NO) directly because NO is the clinically validated biomarker of airway inflammation. Converting NO into nitrogen dioxide (NO2) introduces an additional chemical step that may potentially introduce variability.

Direct measurement of NO provides an immediate and reliable assessment of the patient’s airway inflammation.14 By avoiding conversion processes, the risk of measurement error is reduced, helping ensure results remain accurate and reproducible.13-15 For clinicians, this means greater confidence that the reported FeNO value truly reflects the patient’s inflammatory status and can be used to support informed treatment decisions.15,16

Battery-dependent devices can create delays and frustration when testing is needed but the device requires charging. With NIOX®, testing can begin immediately when the device is plugged in, regardless of battery status. This helps avoid interruptions to clinic workflow, reduces the risk of missed or delayed appointments, and ensures the device is always ready when patients are. For busy clinics, eliminating charging-related downtime can improve efficiency and reduce user frustration.

FeNO testing may be unfamiliar for many patients and, because the test requires a steady exhalation flow, on occasions patients may need more than one attempt before successfully completing a measurement.

With Vivatmo, patients may need to wait up to two minutes between unsuccessful attempts. This can interrupt clinic workflow and increase frustration for both the clinician and patient, particularly if multiple attempts are required.

With NIOX®, a patient can immediately repeat the test following an unsuccessful attempt, helping to keep appointments running efficiently. Thanks to the accuracy of NIOX® technology, only one successful measurement is required, eliminating the need for repeated testing once a valid result has been obtained.13,14,16 In addition, unsuccessful exhalations do not count towards the available measurements on the device or sensor.

In a busy clinic, every minute counts. Reliable equipment helps appointments run smoothly and minimises unnecessary interruptions.

Vivatmo relies on a Bluetooth connection between the device and its display. If that connection is interrupted, testing may be delayed while the connection is re-established, disrupting workflow and taking up valuable clinic time.

With NIOX®, no Bluetooth connection is required. There are no pairing issues or dropped connections, just reliable, ready-to-use FeNO testing whenever you need it.
